UTTARKASHI

Uttarkashi, meaning Kashi of the north, is a town in Uttarakhand, India. It is the district headquarters of Uttarkashi district. Uttarkashi is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level.Uttarkashi district was created on February 24, 1960. An ancient place with rich cultural heritage and as the name suggests is the Kashi of north (Uttara) held almost as high a veneration as Kashi of the plain (Varanasi). Both the Kashi of the plain (Varanasi) as well as the Kashi of north are situated on the banks of the river Ganga (Bhagirathi).

Following are some grate facts about this place......


1. Amazing  Varunavat Parvat: This mountain is said to be relate to the Mahabharata. This mountain is very weak and the slope treatment has been done to prevent the landslides. However in every monsoon landslide take place in varunavat paravat region.


2. Vishwanaath temple: Shri kashi vishwanath is one of the oldest temple. Situated on the bank of the river bhagirathi. Due to its popularity it is also the part of many chaar dhaam yatra. The Temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and it is said to have initially been built by  sage parshuram. One amazing attraction of the temple is the trishool of the shakti temple. 6 meter high and 90 meter wide from the bottom which is thrown at the devil by goddess durga. One of the amazing feature of this trishool is it can not be moved with your entire body force, but easily moved if you apply little pressure with your fingers.


3. Eco-sensitive Zone: Uttarkashi has been added to the Eco-sensitive zones of India, due to massive landslides and unbalanced ecosystem the government marked the place as eco-sensitive.


4. Uttarkashi earthquake 1991: The 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake occurred on 20 October 1991 in the Uttarkashi and Gharwal regions. The earthquake measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale and occurred within the main thrust system of the Himalayan. 1294 villages and more than 300,000 people were affected with the quake and 42,400 houses were damaged.


5. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering: NIM is one of the few mountaineering institutes in India. It conducts various mountaineering and climbing training courses and besides organising climbing expeditions. Bachendri Pal, India's first woman to climb Mount Everest is an alumnus of NIM.
